Cipla was founded in Mumbai in 1935 by Khwaja Abdul Hamied as the Chemical, Industrial and Pharmaceutical Laboratories, and its head office is Cipla House on Peninsula Business Park, Lower Parel; the old factory at Vikhroli still stands. It is the third-largest Indian pharma company and known worldwide for breaking the price of HIV medicines in 2001 under Yusuf Hamied.
