For eleven months of the year Mohammed Ali Road is a traffic artery. For the month of Ramzan it becomes the largest open-air kitchen in India, running from sunset until three or four in the morning, and the food sold there is not sold at any other time.
The stretch runs from Minara Masjid north through Bohri Mohalla and Bhendi Bazaar. Go after nine. Beyond the food, Eid-ul-Fitr and Bakri Eid fill the mosques at Minara Masjid, Jama Masjid and Mahim, and the Mahim dargah’s urs is its own event.

Worth knowing
- Ramzan nights at Mohammed Ali Road are the single best eating window in the Mumbai year.
- Go after nine, and do not try to drive.
- Malpua, firni and aflatoon are Ramzan-only.
- The Mahim dargah urs draws people of every community, which is unusual and worth seeing.
- Haji Ali is cut off at high tide; check the tide table before walking out.
