Mumbai has always been the port through which imported goods entered India, and that is still what separates its shopping from every other Indian city. Imported cheese and charcuterie, European fashion, Swiss watches, attar from the Gulf, wine from Nashik and antiques out of demolished buildings all trade here, often within a few kilometres of each other.
Two things are worth saying plainly. The organised luxury trade is concentrated in two addresses — Jio World Plaza at BKC and Palladium at Lower Parel — and almost everything international is in one or the other. And the older markets sell a great deal of the same category at a fraction of the price, with the difference that you verify the goods yourself.

Worth knowing before you go
- Jio World Plaza at BKC is luxury only; Palladium at Lower Parel is luxury and premium together
- Zaveri Bazaar at Kalbadevi is where the city actually buys gold, by weight and hallmark
- Imported wine and spirits carry heavy state duty, so prices run well above international levels
- Alcohol retail in Maharashtra is licensed, with fixed hours and gazetted dry days
- Antiquities over a hundred years old are export-controlled under Indian law
- Diwali hampers should be ordered two to three weeks ahead
- Crawford Market, Chor Bazaar and Mutton Street are cash-and-bargain markets, not fixed-price shops
