Textiles and Fabric at Mulji Jetha Market

Built in the 1870s by Bhatia merchant families from Kathiawad and Saurashtra, and run to this day by the Mulji Jetha Market Association, whose ten-member board must approve any sale of a shop. Usually described as the largest wholesale cloth market in Asia. Grey cloth, finished fabric and processing agents, feeding the mills and Surat.

Mulji Jetha is the other half of the Kalbadevi cloth trade and the older, larger, more wholesale half. Grey cloth comes in from the mills and from Surat, processing agents sit inside the market, and finished fabric goes out in bales rather than metres. Retail buyers can and do walk in, but the market is built for the trade.

Ghella Dayal & Co, trading in mulls and grey cloth here since 1850, is the oldest house we have found a record of; it still sells cambric and grey mull for dhotis and lungis to Kerala and Saurashtra. The market is run by the Mulji Jetha Market Association, whose board approves every change of ownership of a shop.
