Mulji Jetha Market, Mumbai

One of the largest cloth wholesale markets in the country.

Built in 1880 by the cotton merchant Mulji Jetha, this is the wholesale cloth market that sat at the centre of the Bombay textile trade when the city ran on cotton. Hundreds of shops, arranged in numbered lanes, mostly selling in bulk.

It is next to Mangaldas Market and the two are often treated as one district. Mulji Jetha is the more strictly wholesale of the two.

Worth knowing before you go

  • This is a wholesale market. Retail buyers are better served at Mangaldas.
  • Minimum quantities are the norm, usually by the than (bolt).
  • Weekdays only. The whole district effectively shuts on Sunday.
  • The Bombay textile trade was built here. It is worth seeing for that alone.
