Breach Candy & Kemps Corner

Bhulabhai Desai Road and the Kemps Corner flyover — the old department stores, the hospital, the club with the pool, and the designer studios behind them.

Breach Candy is the stretch of Bhulabhai Desai Road — still called Warden Road by most of the people who live on it — between the Mahalaxmi temple and Kemps Corner. The name is argued over: ‘Burj-khadi’, the tower by the creek, or simply the breach the sea made in the old wall. It is one of the most expensive residential addresses in India, and its shops are the old department stores that South Mumbai grew up with: Amarsons from the 1950s, Benzer from 1959, Premsons.

Breach Candy Hospital was founded in 1946 as a 25-bed nursing home and now has 220 beds, run by a trust, in a building by the architect Claude Batley. The Breach Candy Swimming Bath Trust, beside it, has the famous seawater pool. Kemps Corner, at the flyover, has Crossword, China Garden and the Abu Jani Sandeep Khosla studio; August Kranti Maidan, where the Quit India resolution was passed on 8 August 1942, is a short walk east.
