Mumbai is read by area first, and then by locality. The six area pages show you which part of the city you are in; these pages tell you what is on the ground once you are there — the shops, the eating houses, the offices, the hospitals and the institutions, each with its address and, where it is known, the year it started.
The seven localities
Dadar
The first planned suburb and the Marathi heart of the city. Shivaji Park, Chaitya Bhoomi, the dawn flower market, and where vada pav began.
Bandra West
Queen of the Suburbs. The East Indian villages, St Andrew’s, Mount Mary, Linking Road, and the densest restaurant belt in India.
Colaba
The southern tip. The Causeway, the Taj, Sassoon Dock and the fishing village behind it, and the city’s art district.
Fort & Kala Ghoda
The walled city that was pulled down. The High Court, the Reserve Bank, Dalal Street, the university, and the Parsi lunch rooms between them.
Lalbaug & Parel
Girangaon, the mill village. Lalbaugcha Raja, the chawls, and the largest concentration of hospitals in western India.
Lower Parel
The mills that became malls. Phoenix, Kamala, Todi and Raghuvanshi, and the offices and restaurant floors built on them.
Andheri & Versova
The film suburb. Studios and post-production, SEEPZ and the export trade, Lokhandwala, and a fishing village at the end of the road.

More to come
The seven deep pages were written first because the groundwork for them was in place. The others are added to as each name and address is verified; nothing goes on a page here until it has been checked.
