Chembur grew around the refugee camp that resettled Sindhi families after Partition, and the Sindhi kitchens and the Sindhi Society are still its character; the Tamil and Malayali colonies at Chembur Camp are the other half. The Bharat Petroleum and Hindustan Petroleum refineries at Trombay, the Rashtriya Chemicals plant and the Tata power station are on its eastern edge, and the Eastern Freeway and the Monorail run through it. Diamond Garden is the centre.
The Chembur bakeries and the Sindhi kitchens are on the dining pages; Ambedkar Garden and the RK Studios land, now sold, are the landmarks people navigate by.
