Churchgate is where the Western Railway ends and where a large part of South Mumbai’s office population gets off every morning. The station faces the Oval Maidan and the Gothic row — the High Court, the university, the Rajabai tower — and Veer Nariman Road runs from it to Marine Drive, lined with the restaurants and cafes that have fed the district for seventy years.
The name is the only trace of the Fort’s western gate, which stood near here until the walls came down in the 1860s.
