Vile Parle is the second education centre of the city after the Fort. Shri Vile Parle Kelavani Mandal, founded in 1934 out of a national school started in 1921, built Mithibai College (1961), Narsee Monjee College of Commerce (1964), NMIMS (1981) and D. J. Sanghvi College of Engineering (1994) on one campus in Vile Parle West; the Parle Tilak Vidyalaya Association runs the schools. Tens of thousands of students pass through the suburb every day.
The other thing everyone knows is the biscuit. Parle Products built its first factory here in 1929, made sweets, and started biscuits in 1939; the Parle-G factory ran until 2016. The suburb came first — the company took its name from Vile Parle, not the other way round. The name itself is probably a joining of two old villages, Vidlai (or Padale) and Irle.
Dr R. N. Cooper Hospital, on the Juhu edge, began as a maternity home in 1969 and became a general hospital in 1970; the HBT Medical College attached to it opened in 2015. Vile Parle East has the station lanes and the airport’s Terminal 1 beside it; the suburb is Gujarati and Marathi in roughly equal parts, and its farsan and mithai shops reflect that.
