About Afghan Church
St John the Evangelist, built in memory of the dead of the First Afghan War. The spire is the landmark at the end of the peninsula.
St John the Evangelist, consecrated in 1858, was built in memory of the soldiers who died in the First Anglo-Afghan War. The regimental colours and memorial tablets inside are the record of that campaign.
The spire is the landmark at the far end of the peninsula and the stained glass is among the best in the city. It is an active Anglican church; services are held and visitors are generally welcome outside them.
