About Asiatic Society of Mumbai
The city’s oldest learned society and reference library, housed in the Town Hall. The steps are one of the most filmed in Mumbai.
Founded in 1804 as the Literary Society of Bombay, it is the oldest learned society in the city and holds a reference library of around a hundred thousand volumes, including a 14th-century manuscript of Dante’s Divine Comedy.
It occupies the Town Hall on Horniman Circle, a Greek Revival building completed in 1833. The flight of thirty steps at the front is among the most filmed in Mumbai. The library is open to members; the building and steps are public.
