About Ballard Estate
The shipping, freight-forwarding and customs district, built on reclaimed land. Edwardian, low-rise and quiet after six.
Laid out in the 1910s on land reclaimed from the harbour by the Bombay Port Trust, and built to a single Edwardian code — which is why it looks nothing like the rest of Fort. Wide streets, uniform stone frontages, no hoardings.
It was and remains the shipping district: freight forwarders, customs house agents, shipping lines and the Port Trust itself. It empties after office hours, and that emptiness is the reason film crews use it.
