About Bombay High Court
Established 1862. The present Gothic Revival building was put up between 1871 and 1878 to Col James Fuller’s design and first sat on 10 January 1879. A move to Bandra Kurla Complex has been announced.
The court’s jurisdiction is one of the widest in India — Maharashtra, Goa, Dadra and Nagar Haveli, and Daman and Diu — with benches at Nagpur, Aurangabad and Panaji. Its commercial and company side is the reason so much of India’s corporate litigation is argued within walking distance of Dalal Street.
The building is working, not a museum: it is open on court days, the corridors are crowded with advocates in black, and the chambers and typing stalls spill into the lanes behind. A shift of the principal seat to Bandra Kurla Complex has been announced and argued over for years; until it happens, this is where the court sits.
