About Colaba Observatory
One of the oldest geomagnetic observatories in the world; the readings taken here are part of the global record.
Established in 1826, it is one of the oldest geomagnetic observatories in the world, and its long unbroken series of magnetic and meteorological readings is part of the global scientific record.
Electrification of the city’s trams and railways interfered with the magnetic instruments, so that work was moved to Alibag in the early twentieth century. The Colaba site remains in use for meteorological observation — the Mumbai rainfall figures quoted in the news are Colaba and Santacruz readings.
