The Santacruz Electronics Export Processing Zone, set up at Andheri East in 1973 as India’s second export processing zone. More than 400 units.
It began as electronics and software, but jewellery is what it became known for: at its peak over 40 per cent of India’s jewellery exports came out of this single compound, made by tens of thousands of karigars working inside it. It is a customs-bonded zone — entry is on business, with a pass.
