About The Gateway of India
Completed in 1924 to mark the 1911 royal visit, and the point the last British troops left from in 1948. The launches to Elephanta go from beside it.
Built to mark the 1911 visit of George V and Mary, and completed in 1924 to George Wittet’s design in Indo-Saracenic style, in basalt. In February 1948 the last British troops in India left through it, which is the fact that gives the arch its second meaning.
Launches to Elephanta Island and harbour ferries leave from the jetty beside it. It is crowded from the afternoon onwards; early morning is the only quiet hour.
