Jawaharlal Nehru Port at Nhava Sheva, across the harbour in Navi Mumbai, opened in 1989 and is the largest container port in India, handling more than half the country’s container traffic through five terminals run by APM Terminals, DP World, PSA and the port itself. It is linked by the dedicated freight corridor and the Atal Setu to the mainland.
The port authority, a Government body, owns the land and water and leases the terminals; a satellite port at Vadhavan is under construction.
