The mill belt is the centre of the festival. Lalbaug, Parel, Chinchpokli, Worli and Dadar hold the biggest mandals, the longest queues and the most elaborate pandals, and the density is such that you can walk between eight or ten major ones in an evening — slowly, because so can everyone else.
The mills are gone but the mandals they founded are not. Several were started by mill workers’ committees in the 1920s and 30s and are still run by the same neighbourhoods.

Worth knowing
- Lalbaug, Ganesh Galli and Tejukaya are within a few hundred metres of each other.
- Chinchpokli, Parel and Lalbaug are one continuous walk.
- Use Chinchpokli or Currey Road station; the roads are closed to traffic for most of the festival.
- Late night, after one, is when the queues are shortest.
- The food stalls in the Lalbaug lanes are part of the experience and run all eleven days.
