Done badly, Ganeshotsav is twenty hours in a line. Done well, it is the best week of the Mumbai year. The rules that locals follow are simple.
Go on a weekday. Go late at night, after one, when the queues thin and the city is still awake. Do the Lalbaug cluster on foot in one trip, because the three biggest mandals are within a few hundred metres of each other. And if your only aim is to see good pandals rather than to see the most famous ones, the suburbs give you the same thing in a tenth of the time.

Worth knowing
- Weekday, after one in the morning. This is the single most useful thing to know.
- The Lalbaug cluster is one walk; do not treat the three mandals as separate trips.
- Mukh Darshan instead of Navsacha cuts the Lalbaug wait from a day to hours.
- Aagman processions before the festival give you the spectacle with no queue.
- Do not drive anywhere during the eleven days, and especially not on Anant Chaturdashi.
