A few dozen mandals draw crowds large enough to change the traffic of the whole city. They compete — on the size of the idol, on the pandal design, on the value of the gold, on the length of the queue — and several have been at it for ninety years.
Ganesh Galli, a few hundred metres from Lalbaugcha Raja, is the older of the two and builds a different temple replica every year. GSB Seva Mandal at King’s Circle is the richest: the idol is decorated with tens of kilos of gold and the mandal takes out an insurance policy running into hundreds of crores. Andhericha Raja is the suburbs’ answer to Lalbaug.

Worth knowing
- Lalbaug and Ganesh Galli are within walking distance of each other; do both in one trip.
- GSB at King’s Circle is the one to see for the gold and the discipline of the queue.
- Chinchpoklicha Chintamani’s arrival procession, days before the festival, is worth seeing on its own.
- The suburban mandals have far shorter queues than Lalbaug for comparable pandals.
- Most big mandals publish darshan timings and queue advice on their own channels before the festival.
