Byculla is the eastern side of central Mumbai between Mazgaon and Parel: the Veermata Jijabai Bhosale Udyan, the city’s zoo and botanical garden, with the Dr Bhau Daji Lad Museum of 1872 inside it; the Magen David synagogue; the Gloria church; and the Nagpada and Madanpura lanes that are the best-known Muslim food district after Mohammed Ali Road. Byculla station is on the Central Line.
It was the first fashionable suburb of the British city before Malabar Hill, and the bungalows and clubs of that period survive in fragments among the chawls and the new towers.
