Mahalaxmi is named for the temple on the seafront, and holds four of the city’s landmarks within a kilometre: the Mahalaxmi Racecourse, laid out in 1883; the Haji Ali dargah on its causeway; the Mahalaxmi Dhobi Ghat, the open-air laundry beside the station that every visitor photographs from the bridge; and the temple itself. Phoenix Mills and Lower Parel are to the north, Breach Candy to the south.
The racecourse is the largest open space in the island city and its future — a park, a theme park, or racing — is a long-running argument.
