Powai is built around the lake and the IIT campus beside it. Hiranandani Gardens, developed from the 1980s on land north of the lake, is the planned township with the neo-classical facades that most people picture when they hear the name: offices, apartments, the Galleria shopping street, the hotels and the restaurants that serve a largely corporate population. Chandivali, to the south, is the newer extension.
It is the one suburb in Mumbai that looks planned, and it is where much of the city’s technology and consulting workforce lives and works.
