Sion, from ‘Simva’ or boundary, was the northern limit of Bombay island, and the Sion Fort of 1669 on its hill was built to watch the Salsette border. Today it is the Sion Hospital (Lokmanya Tilak Municipal General Hospital, one of the three big municipal hospitals), the Sion Koliwada and Sindhi colony that resettled Partition refugees, Gandhi Market for cloth and readymades, and the edge of Dharavi.
Everything north of Sion is, strictly, Salsette: the suburbs begin here.
