About Haffkine Institute
In the old Government House, where the Governor of Bombay lived until 1885. A plague and vaccine research institute since.
Founded in 1899 as the Plague Research Laboratory, and named for Waldemar Haffkine, who developed a plague vaccine while working in Bombay during the epidemic of the 1890s.
It occupies the old Government House at Parel — the residence of the Governors of Bombay until the 1880s, before they moved to Malabar Point. The institute works on vaccines, antisera and venom research, and is the reason this stretch of Parel became a medical district at all.
