About Portuguese Church
Our Lady of Salvation. It stood here when this was Lower Mahim — farmland and coconut groves — three centuries before the suburb was planned.
Our Lady of Salvation, known to everyone as the Portuguese Church. A church has stood on this site since 1596, when this was Lower Mahim — farmland and coconut groves under Portuguese Salsette.
The present building is much later, but the foundation date is the point: it was here three hundred years before the Improvement Trust drew the streets around it. It remains an active parish church of the East Indian community.
