About Shivaji Park
About 112,000 square metres of open ground. Sachin Tendulkar and a long line of Indian cricketers learned here, and Maharashtra’s politics has held its rallies on it for seventy years. It is a public ground, not a stadium — you can walk in.
Laid out in 1925 under the Improvement Trust scheme and named for Chhatrapati Shivaji. About 112,000 square metres of open maidan — one of the largest in the city.
Two things happen here. One is cricket: the coaching camps on this ground produced Sunil Gavaskar, Sachin Tendulkar, Vinod Kambli, Ajit Agarkar and a long line of others, and Ramakant Achrekar’s nets were on it. The other is politics: Marathi political Mumbai has held its rallies on this maidan for seventy years, and the Shiv Sena’s founding rally was here in 1966. It is a public ground, free to walk into.
