About Tata Memorial Hospital
Commissioned by the Sir Dorabji Tata Trust in February 1941. India’s principal cancer centre; patients come from every state and from neighbouring countries, and the pavements around it are full of families who have travelled for weeks.
Commissioned by the Sir Dorabji Tata Trust on 28 February 1941, and now India’s principal cancer centre. It is run under the Department of Atomic Energy, with the research arm at ACTREC in Navi Mumbai.
Patients come from every state in India and from Bangladesh, Nepal and further. A large share are treated free or at subsidised rates. The pavements and lodges around the hospital are full of families who have travelled for days and will stay for weeks, and the volunteer kitchens and dharamshalas that feed them are part of what Parel is.
