About Mama Kane
Mama Kane’s Swacha Upahar Griha is one of the oldest Maharashtrian vegetarian eating houses in Mumbai. The name says what it set out to be: swacha upahar griha, a clean eating house — which in the 1930s, for a Marathi mill-and-office clientele with no safe place to eat out, was the whole proposition.
The menu has stayed close to where it started: thalipeeth, misal, batata vada, sabudana khichdi, piyush and tea. It is a reference point for Maharashtrian food in the city rather than a destination restaurant, and it is best understood that way.
