About Sahakari Bhandar
Sahakari Bhandar is the Maharashtrian co-operative department store — groceries, provisions, household goods and staples, run on co-operative lines rather than as a private chain. The Dadar West branch on S. K. Bole Road, near Agar Bazaar, is the one most people mean.
It came out of the co-operative movement that shaped middle-class Marathi Bombay in the decades after Independence, and it is the reason a generation in Dadar, Matunga and Shivaji Park did its monthly shopping in one place long before the malls arrived. Modern supermarkets have taken much of that trade; the Bhandar is still where the older households go.
