Department Stores in Mumbai

Mumbai had department stores long before it had malls. Akbarallys opened in 1897 and the Bombay Swadeshi Stores in 1905, both selling everything from cloth to crockery to a city with no other way to buy it.

The modern chains took that business into the malls from the 1990s. The Breach Candy stores are the surviving middle ground: independent, family-run, and still where South Mumbai shops for basics.
