Fruit and Vegetables at Crawford Market

Built 1869, officially Mahatma Jyotiba Phule Mandai; designed by William Emerson with friezes by Lockwood Kipling. Fruit, vegetables, imported provisions, dry fruit, spices, party goods, stationery and household plastics. The cloth trade is not here — it is at Mangaldas and Mulji Jetha, a few minutes north.

This is what Crawford Market was built for in 1869 and still does: fruit and vegetables under the iron roof, with the imported and out-of-season produce the city’s hotels and expatriates buy, and the mango trade in season. The sellers are stallholders, not firms, and the market is best read by its lanes — fruit at the front, vegetables deeper in, the pet and bird market at the back.
