Crawford Market, Mumbai

Officially Mahatma Jyotiba Phule Mandai, the city's best-known covered market.

Built in 1869 and given to the city by Arthur Crawford, its first municipal commissioner, the building was designed by William Emerson with bas-reliefs over the entrance by Lockwood Kipling — Rudyard Kipling’s father, then head of the Bombay art school. It was the first building in India to be lit by electricity. Officially it is now Mahatma Jyotiba Phule Mandai.

Inside it is a fruit, vegetable, poultry and imported-goods market, and the lanes immediately outside it sell everything else: pet supplies on one side, kitchen equipment on another, imported chocolate and packaged food opposite. It is a bargaining market and prices asked of an obvious outsider are not the prices paid.
