Zaveri Bazaar, Mumbai

The jewellery bazaar, and a market in its own right.

The gold and jewellery market of India, in a few dense lanes off Kalbadevi Road, trading here since the 1860s. Several thousand firms work in this cluster — manufacturers, wholesalers, retailers, refiners, hallmarking centres and the angadia couriers who move goods and cash between them. A very large share of the gold jewellery sold in India passes through these lanes.

It is not a tourist market. It is a working trade district, and the retail shops on the main road are the visible edge of a much bigger wholesale business behind them.

Worth knowing before you go

  • Buy hallmarked, and take the bill. BIS hallmarking is mandatory.
  • The making charge is negotiable; the gold rate on the day is not.
  • Weekdays only for the trade. Many shops shut on Sunday.
  • Wedding season — roughly November to February, and around Akshaya Tritiya — is when it is busiest.
  • The lanes are narrow and crowded. Go early.

What is traded here

Gold, silver and fine jewellery — a bullion street rather than a goods market, which is why none of the ten wholesale trades on this site is listed under it. The jewellery houses are on the shopping pages; the imitation and bridal trade is in Bhuleshwar, next door.
