Chor Bazaar, Mumbai

The second-hand and antique market.

The antiques and salvage market, on Mutton Street off Grant Road. The name means thieves’ market; the usual explanation is that it was originally Shor Bazaar, the noisy market, and the name shifted. Either way it has sold colonial furniture, brass, gramophones, car parts, film posters, chandeliers and reproductions since the nineteenth century.

Provenance is what you make of it. A great deal of what is sold as antique is reproduction, and the dealers will tell you so if you ask directly. Friday is traditionally the big day.

Worth knowing before you go

  • Friday is the traditional big day.
  • Assume reproduction unless told otherwise, and ask directly — dealers usually answer honestly.
  • Bargain hard. Opening prices are several times the closing ones.
  • Genuine antiquities over a hundred years old are export-controlled under Indian law.
  • Most shops shut on Friday afternoon for prayers.
