The modern beauty trade sits in the malls, but Mumbai’s older perfume business is the more interesting one. The attar shops around Bhendi Bazaar and Mohammed Ali Road sell oil-based, alcohol-free perfume — oud, musk, rose, khus — in the Arab and Indian tradition, decanted by weight from glass bottles.
Several of these shops have been trading for generations and supply the Gulf as well as the local market. Go in the evening, and expect to be given several things to smell before you are allowed to buy anything.
