Mumbai’s antique trade runs on two levels. Mutton Street at Chor Bazaar has sold salvage, colonial furniture, gramophones, brass and reproductions since the nineteenth century — everything there is negotiable and provenance is what you make of it.
The Kala Ghoda galleries and the Indian auction houses are the other end: documented, catalogued and priced accordingly. Note that genuine antiquities over a hundred years old are export-controlled under Indian law, so check before you buy something you intend to take out of the country.
