Mumbai has lost some of its best-known bookshops — Strand Book Stall at Fort closed in 2018 after seventy years, and Rhythm House at Kala Ghoda closed in 2016 — but the trade has not disappeared.
Kitab Khana at Fort is the successor institution, Furtados at Kalbadevi has been selling musical instruments since the 1860s, and the pavement booksellers at Flora Fountain still carry things no catalogue will find you.
