BKC was built from the 1970s on reclaimed Mithi river land, as a second business district to relieve Nariman Point. It now holds the National Stock Exchange, the Bharat Diamond Bourse, the head offices of several banks, the US consulate, the Jio World Centre and Jio World Plaza. It is an office district, so its restaurants run on weekday lunch and after-work trade, and many are quiet at weekends.
